During the Summer of 2020, I was fortunate enough to land a ten week internship with Expedia Group. This was my first internship and due to the coronavirus pandemic, I had to virtually work from home.
I was placed on a team consisting of four interns from around the United States. One intern was from Michigan, another was working from Texas, and the other intern and I were based in Washington State.
Our team was working on Federated Search, an internal tool to help Expedia Employees find information quicker. The project was extremely open ended, and it was up to our team of four to decide the scope
of the project and how to most efficiently solve the problem within our 10 week internship.
We ended up learning a lot of new technologies. We used React for our front-end and Express.js for our back-end. We both utilized and developed REST APIs to all our code to be reused in the future.
We also integrated Okta (a single sign on platform) and learned more about different security protocols. Before this internship, I had little to no experience with Javascript, did not know what a
REST API was, and had never programmed anything related to security protocols. There were even more tools I got to use such as AWS EC2 instances, Kumo deployment pipelines, and many many more. It was
a huge learning curve but thanks to my mentors, my manger, and my fellow interns, learning everything could not have been easier.
Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Sam Wheelock and I am currently a Computer Science student at the University of Washington - Seattle Campus. I grew up in Tacoma Washington with my parents and older sister. Ever since I started going to UW, I have lived up in Seattle with a bunch of my friends from my fraternity (I'll talk about that later). I have always loved puzzles and problem solving games which is why I decided to go into computer science.
Currently my main interests are sports, photography, and volunteering. The main sports that I have been playing are Spikeball, Frisbee, Volleyball, and the occasional tossing of some cubes. I love
playing any sports though as long as I have others to play with.
I most recently started to get into photography and just purchased my first camera (Sony a6100). I want to eventually get into video
editing but I need to save up some money first. I am still an amateur but I have really enjoyed taking photos of my friends and scenery this summer.
Lastly, one of my favorite hobbies during college
has been volunteering. Most of my volunteering has been through the fraternity I joined when I was a freshman (Kappa Sigma). I spent at least 30 hours a quarter volunteering for mutliple organizations our fraternity
was partnered with (such as Green Seattle, Relay for Life, and MS Bike). I also poured many hours into the two leadership positions I acquired during my Sophomore and Junior years, where I was Treasurer and then President.
I gained many skills through these positions and did my best to give my members a great experience while also doing as much as I could to have a positive impact on our community. Outside of the fraternity, I also joined Camp
Kesem where I have helped raise money to support kids whose families have been impacted by cancer. This club funded a 1 week all expenses paid summer camp for these kids where I was able to be one of the camp counselors.
